Birthdays, weddings and festivals need greetings, gifts and the perfect tense of verbs like fêter and offrir.

Occasions

un anniversaire (birthday), un mariage (wedding), Noël (Christmas), le jour de l'An (New Year's Day), le réveillon (celebration meal on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve), une fête (party / festival).
Joyeux anniversaire ! Joyeux Noël ! Bonne année !

Gifts and pronouns

offrir (to give as a present): past participle offert.
J'ai offert un livre à ma sœur. → Je lui ai offert un livre.
Mes parents m'ont offert un portable. = My parents gave me a phone.
The pronoun goes before avoir in the perfect tense.

Describing a celebration

Nous avons fêté mon anniversaire au restaurant. (fêter = to celebrate)
Toute la famille est venue.
Nous avons dansé jusqu'à minuit.
C'était inoubliable ! (It was unforgettable!)
Worked example

Translate: For my birthday, my parents gave me a phone.

  1. For my birthday: pour mon anniversaire.
  2. Gave me: m'ont offert (pronoun before avoir).
  3. A phone: un portable.

Answer: Pour mon anniversaire, mes parents m'ont offert un portable.
