Pronouns like it, him, her and them stop you repeating nouns. In Spanish they usually go before the verb.

Direct object pronouns

me (me), te (you), lo (him, it masculine), la (her, it feminine), los / las (them).
(Plural nos and os are Higher.)
¿El libro? Lo leo. = I read it. ¿La película? La vi ayer. = I saw it yesterday.

Indirect object pronouns

to / for someone: me, te, le (to him, to her), les (to them).
Le doy un regalo. = I give him / her a present.
Les escribo. = I write to them.

Position and the personal a

Before a conjugated verb: Lo compro.
With an infinitive, before the first verb or joined to the infinitive: Lo voy a comprar = Voy a comprarlo.
Personal a goes before a person who is the direct object: Veo a mi abuela. Then La veo.
Worked example

Say: I'm going to buy it (the shirt, la camisa).

  1. camisa is feminine, so it = la
  2. Put it before voy, or join it to the infinitive.

Answer: La voy a comprar. / Voy a comprarla.

Key idea

Lo / la / los / las = it, him, her, them. Le / les = to him, to her, to them. They go before the conjugated verb or join the end of an infinitive. Personal a before people.
