Negatives and questions

Say what you never, don't or no longer do, and ask clear questions.

Negatives

Put no before the verb: No como carne.
nunca (never), nada (nothing), nadie (nobody), ninguno / ningún / ninguna (none, not any).
Spanish uses double negatives: No veo nada. No viene nadie. No tengo ningún problema.
Nunca voy and No voy nunca both mean I never go.
Higher: ya no (no longer), tampoco (neither), ni ... ni (neither ... nor).

Question words

All have accents: ¿Qué? (what), ¿Quién? / ¿Quiénes? (who), ¿Cuándo? (when), ¿Dónde? (where), ¿Por qué? (why), ¿Cómo? (how), ¿Cuál? / ¿Cuáles? (which), ¿Cuánto / cuánta / cuántos / cuántas? (how much, how many).
porque (one word, no accent) = because.

Making questions

Raise your voice: ¿Tienes hermanos?
After a question word the verb comes before the subject: ¿Dónde vive tu hermano?
Write ¿ at the start and ? at the end.
Worked example

Translate: I don't eat anything in the morning.

  1. no before the verb: no como
  2. anything after a negative = nada
  3. in the morning = por la mañana

Answer: No como nada por la mañana.

Key idea

No + verb + nada / nadie / nunca / ningún. Question words take accents: qué, quién, cuándo, dónde, por qué, cómo, cuál, cuánto. Porque = because.
