Higher: relative, possessive and other pronouns

Higher tier adds more pronouns: lo que and el que, possessive pronouns like el mío, aquel, conmigo, and plural object pronouns.

Relative pronouns

que = who, which, that (Foundation).
lo que = what, which (a whole idea): Lo que más me gusta es la playa.
el que, la que, los que, las que and el cual, la cual (which, who), often after a preposition: La chica con la que hablo es mi prima.

Possessive pronouns

They agree with the thing owned: el mío, la mía, los míos, las mías (mine), el tuyo (yours), el suyo (his, hers, theirs), el nuestro, el vuestro.
Mi casa es grande; la tuya es pequeña.
After ser the article is often dropped: Es mío. (It's mine.)

Other pronouns

aquel, aquella, aquellos, aquellas = that, those (over there); aquello = that (idea).
After prepositions: para mí, para ti, con él; special forms conmigo, contigo.
Plural object pronouns nos, os. Reciprocal: Nos vemos. (We see each other.) Se llevan bien. (They get on well with each other.)
Worked example

Translate: What I like most is the beach.

  1. what (a whole idea) = lo que
  2. I like most = más me gusta
  3. is the beach = es la playa

Answer: Lo que más me gusta es la playa.

Key idea

Lo que = what / which. El que, la que, el cual after prepositions. El mío / la mía agree with the thing owned. Conmigo, contigo. Aquel = that over there.
