The preterite is the Spanish past tense for completed actions: what you did yesterday, last weekend or last year. You will use it all the time at GCSE.
Endings for -ar verbs
Spelling changes in the yo form
To keep the sound, a few verbs change spelling in the yo form only:
jugar: jugué llegar (to arrive): llegué sacar (to take out): saqué tocar: toqué empezar: empecé
The other forms are regular: jugaste, jugĂł, jugamos...

Past time phrases
ayer (yesterday), anoche (last night), el fin de semana pasado (last weekend), el sĂĄbado pasado, el año pasado (last year), hace dos dĂas (two days ago)
El verano pasado visité Madrid con mi familia.
El verano pasado visité Madrid con mi familia.
Translate: Last weekend I played football and my sister listened to music.
- Last weekend: el fin de semana pasado.
- I played: jugué (spelling change: gu).
- my sister listened: mi hermana escuchĂł.
Answer: El fin de semana pasado juguĂ© al fĂștbol y mi hermana escuchĂł mĂșsica.
Preterite -ar endings: -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron. Accents change the meaning. Yo forms jugué, llegué, saqué, toqué, empecé change spelling.
