The most common verbs are irregular in the preterite. Learn these four and you can say where you went, what you did and what it was like.

Four key irregular verbs

Using them

Fui a la playa. = I went to the beach.
Hice mis deberes. = I did my homework. Hizo buen tiempo. = The weather was good.
Tuve un accidente. = I had an accident.
Estuve en Madrid una semana. = I was in Madrid for a week.

Fue: it was

Use fue to give an opinion about a past event:
Fue genial / increĆ­ble / divertido / aburrido / un desastre.
¿Qué tal las vacaciones? Fueron fenomenales. (plural, for las vacaciones)
Worked example

Translate: Last summer I went to Spain. It was great.

  1. Last summer: el verano pasado.
  2. I went: fui (ir).
  3. It was great: fue genial (ser).

Answer: El verano pasado fui a EspaƱa. Fue genial.

Key idea

Ir / ser: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron. Hacer: hice, hizo. Tener: tuve, tuvo. Estar: estuve, estuvo. Fue genial = it was great. No accents on these forms.
