Sport: the dual

Arabic has a special form for exactly two of something, called the dual. It is used all the time in sport: two teams, two players, twice a week.

Sports

أَسْبَحُ = I swim. أُمارِسُ الرِّياضة = I do sport.

The dual

How often?

ثَلاثَ مَرّات = three times.
The two teams played an exciting match.
Worked example

Translate: I play football twice a week.

  1. I play football:
  2. Twice: the dual of مرّة in the ـين form: مرّتين.
  3. A week:

Key idea

Dual = exactly two: add ـان (subject) or ـين (after prepositions and as object); ة becomes ت.
