Reading and music: plurals

Arabic has three ways to make plurals. Two follow rules; the third, the broken plural, changes the inside of the word.

Reading and music

أَقْرَأُ (I read) قِصّة (a story), رِواية (a novel), مَجَلّة (a magazine), كِتاب (a book), كِتاب إلِكْتْرونِيّ (an e-book).
أَسْتَمِعُ إلى الموسيقى (I listen to music), أُغْنِيّة (a song), مُطْرِب / مُطْرِبة (a singer), فِرْقة (a band).
أَعْزِفُ على العود / الغيتار / البيانو = I play the oud / guitar / piano.

Three kinds of plural

Saying what you like

أُحِبُّ قِراءةَ القِصَصِ البوليسِيّة = I like reading detective stories.
أَسْتَمِعُ إلى الموسيقى العَرَبِيّة كُلَّ يَوْم = I listen to Arabic music every day.
المُطْرِبونَ المَشْهورونَ يُغَنّونَ في الحَفَلات = Famous singers sing at concerts.
Worked example

Translate: I read stories and magazines.

  1. I read: أقرأ.
  2. Stories: the broken plural of قصة is قصص; use ال for things in general.
  3. Magazines: مجلات (sound feminine plural).

Answer: أقرأ القصص والمجلات.

Key idea

Sound masculine plural: ـون / ـين (male people). Sound feminine plural: ـات. Broken plurals change inside the word: كتاب → كتب, قصة → قصص, فيلم → أفلام. Learn each one.
