Going out: invitations and the future

Making plans is easy in Arabic: add سـ to the front of a present tense verb and it becomes the future.

The future

سَـ + present tense = will: سَأَذْهَبُ (sa-adhhabu) = I will go. سَنَلْتَقي = we will meet. سَيَلْعَبُ = he will play.
سَوْفَ is a separate word with the same meaning: سَوْفَ أَزورُ جَدَّتي = I will visit my grandmother.
Time words: غَدًا (tomorrow), بَعْدَ غَد (the day after tomorrow), في عُطْلةِ نِهايةِ الأُسْبوع (at the weekend), الأُسْبوعَ القادِم (next week).

Invitations

Going out

أَخْرُجُ مَعَ أَصْدِقائي = I go out with my friends. نَذْهَبُ إلى المَرْكَزِ التِّجارِيّ = We go to the shopping centre.
نَزورُ الأَقارِب = We visit relatives. نَتَكَلَّمُ ونَضْحَك = We talk and laugh.
Worked example

Translate: Tomorrow I will go to the cinema with my friends.

  1. Tomorrow: غدًا.
  2. I will go: سأذهب.
  3. To the cinema with my friends: إلى السينما مع أصدقائي.

Answer: غدًا سأذهب إلى السينما مع أصدقائي.

Key idea

سـ or سوف + present tense = future: سأذهب, سوف أزور. Invite with هل تريد أن ...؟ Accept: نعم، بكل سرور. Refuse: آسف، لا أستطيع لأنّي مشغول.
