Food and drink: likes, dislikes and negatives

Food is everywhere in the exams: meals, likes and dislikes, eating healthily. You also need لا to say what you do not eat.

Food and meals

Likes and dislikes

أُحِبُّ (uHibbu) I like / love, أُفَضِّلُ I prefer, أَكْرَهُ I hate.
After these verbs use ال for things in general: أُحِبُّ الدَّجاج = I like chicken.
أُفَضِّلُ السَّمَكَ على اللَّحْم = I prefer fish to meat.

Saying "don't" and plural things

Put لا before a present tense verb: لا آكُلُ اللَّحْم = I don't eat meat. لا أَشْرَبُ القَهْوة = I don't drink coffee.
Plurals of things (not people) take a feminine singular adjective: الفَواكِهُ لَذيذة = Fruit is delicious. الحَلَوِيّاتُ غَيْرُ صِحِّيّة = Sweets are unhealthy.
Worked example

Translate: I like fish but I don't like meat.

  1. I like fish: أحبّ السمك (with ال).
  2. But: لكنْ or ولكنْ.
  3. I don't like meat: لا أحبّ اللحم.

Answer: أحبّ السمك لكن لا أحبّ اللحم.

Key idea

أحبّ، أفضّل، أكره + noun with ال. لا + present tense = don't: لا آكل اللحم. Plurals of things take a feminine singular adjective: الفواكه لذيذة.
