Shopping: numbers, prices and colours

Shopping means numbers, prices and colours. Arabic colours have a special feminine form you need to know.

Numbers and digits

In the shop

بِكَمْ هذا؟ = How much is this? كَمِ الثَّمَن؟ = What is the price?
أُريدُ أَنْ أَشْتَرِيَ ... = I want to buy ... هَلْ عِنْدَكُم مَقاسٌ أَكْبَر؟ = Do you have a bigger size?
قَميص shirt, فُسْتان dress, حِذاء shoes, بِنْطال trousers, حَقيبة bag. رَخيص cheap, غالٍ / غالي expensive.

Colours

Worked example

Translate: I want to buy a red dress.

  1. I want to buy: أريد أن أشتري.
  2. A dress: فستانًا (it is the object of the verb).
  3. Red: فستان is masculine, so أحمر.

Answer: أريد أن أشتري فستانًا أحمر.

Key idea

Numbers 1 to 10: واحد، اثنان، ثلاثة، أربعة، خمسة، ستة، سبعة، ثمانية، تسعة، عشرة. بكم هذا؟ = How much is this? Colours: أحمر / حمراء, أسود / سوداء, أبيض / بيضاء.
