Eating out: this, that and ordering

Ordering food means pointing at things: this dish, that table. Arabic demonstratives agree with the noun.

In the restaurant

مَطْعَم restaurant, قائِمةُ الطَّعام menu, النّادِل the waiter, طاوِلة table, طَبَق dish, plate.
طاوِلةٌ لِأَرْبَعةِ أَشْخاص، مِن فَضْلِك = A table for four people, please.
أُريدُ ... / سَآخُذُ ... = I want ... / I'll have ... الحِسابُ مِن فَضْلِك = The bill, please.
هذا الطَّبَقُ بارِد = This dish is cold (a complaint).

This and that

This is or this ...?

هذا طَبَقٌ لَذيذ = This is a delicious dish (no ال: a sentence).
هذا الطَّبَقُ لَذيذ = This dish is delicious (ال on the noun).
هذِهِ السَّلَطةُ طازَجة = This salad is fresh. هؤُلاءِ الطُّلّابُ جائِعون = These students are hungry.
Worked example

Translate: This soup is delicious, but that salad is cold.

  1. This soup: شوربة is feminine, so هذه الشوربة.
  2. Delicious: feminine لذيذة.
  3. But that salad is cold: لكنّ تلك السلطة باردة.

Answer: هذه الشوربة لذيذة، لكنّ تلك السلطة باردة.

Key idea

هذا (m), هذه (f and plural things), هؤلاء (plural people) = this / these; ذلك (m), تلك (f) = that. هذا طبق = this is a dish; هذا الطبق = this dish. الحساب من فضلك = the bill, please.
