Places in town and directions

Describe where you live, say where places are and follow or give directions. In town is also a speaking role-play setting.

(After no hay, the article is usually dropped.)

Where places are

Use estar for location: El banco está...
al lado de (next to), cerca de (near), lejos de (far from), delante de (in front of), detrás de (behind), entre (between).
De + el = del: al lado del cine.

Directions

¿Dónde está...? = Where is...? ¿Por dónde se va a...? = How do you get to...?
Sigue hasta el final de la calle (carry on to the end of the street), gira a la derecha / a la izquierda (turn right / left), toma la primera calle (take the first street), cruza la plaza (cross the square).
These are tú commands. To a stranger you would use the usted form: siga, gire, tome, cruce.
Worked example

Translate: The bank is next to the cinema.

Key idea

Hay = there is / there are. Estar for location.
