Name shops, ask about prices, use big numbers and point things out with this, that, these and those.

Shops and prices

la tienda (shop), el mercado (market), la farmacia (chemist's), el supermercado, el centro comercial (shopping centre).
¿Cuánto cuesta? (one thing) ¿Cuánto cuestan? (more than one)
Big numbers: cien (100), doscientos (200), quinientos (500), setecientos (700), novecientos (900), mil (1000). 500, 700 and 900 are irregular.

This and that

este, esta, estos, estas = this, these
ese, esa, esos, esas = that, those
They agree with the noun: esta camiseta, estos zapatos, esa falda, esos pantalones.
¿Tiene esta camiseta en otra talla? = Do you have this T-shirt in another size?

Opinions on shopping

Prefiero comprar por internet porque es más práctico.
Prefiero comprar en tiendas porque puedo probarme la ropa. (I can try on the clothes)
Me queda grande / pequeño. = It is too big / small on me.
Worked example

Translate: How much do these trousers cost?

  1. Trousers = los pantalones (plural)
  2. these + masculine plural = estos
  3. more than one thing: cuestan

Answer: ¿Cuánto cuestan estos pantalones?

Key idea

¿Cuánto cuesta? for one thing, ¿Cuánto cuestan? for more. Este / esta / estos / estas = this / these; ese / esa / esos / esas = that / those. 500 = quinientos.
