What makes a good friend? How should people treat each other? Here is the language to talk about friendship, respect and equality.

What makes a good friend

Un buen amigo es alguien que... = A good friend is someone who...
escucha (listens), me apoya (supports me), me hace reír (makes me laugh), me ayuda (helps me).
Para mí, la amistad es muy importante. = For me, friendship is very important.

Personality adjectives

Adjectives agree with the person.

Equality and respect

la igualdad = equality, el respeto = respect, los derechos = rights.
Hay que respetar a todos. = You must respect everyone.
Todos tenemos los mismos derechos. = We all have the same rights.
The word a before people (respetar a todos) is the personal a.
Worked example

Translate: My best friend is called Ana. She is loyal and funny.

  1. My best friend (female) = mi mejor amiga
  2. is called = se llama
  3. She is = es (no pronoun needed)
  4. funny agrees with Ana: divertida; fiel does not change

Answer: Mi mejor amiga se llama Ana. Es fiel y divertida.

Key idea

Un buen amigo es alguien que... + present tense verb. Adjectives agree with the person (simpático / simpática), but fiel and optimista stay the same. La igualdad = equality, el respeto = respect.
