Meals, likes and dislikes, special diets and how to order in a café or restaurant. Ordering food is also a speaking role-play setting.

Meals

el desayuno = breakfast
la comida / el almuerzo = lunch (comer = to have lunch, to eat)
la cena = evening meal
Para el desayuno tomo pan y un café. = For breakfast I have bread and a coffee.

Ordering

Waiter: ¿Qué va a tomar? = What will you have?
You: Quisiera... or Para mí... = I would like... / For me...
un bocadillo de queso (cheese sandwich), un café con leche, una botella de agua (a bottle of water).
La cuenta, por favor. = The bill, please. ¿Cuánto es? = How much is it?

Opinions and diets

Me encanta el pescado. = I love fish. Me encantan las patatas fritas. (plural, so encantan)
No me gustan las verduras.
Soy vegetariano / vegetariana (no como carne). Soy vegano / vegana.
Soy alérgico / alérgica a la leche. = I am allergic to milk.
Worked example

Order: I would like a cheese sandwich and a bottle of water.

  1. Quisiera = I would like (polite)
  2. a cheese sandwich = un bocadillo de queso
  3. a bottle of water = una botella de agua

Answer: Quisiera un bocadillo de queso y una botella de agua.

Key idea

Quisiera / Para mí to order politely. La cuenta, por favor. Me encanta + singular, me encantan + plural. Soy vegetariano / vegetariana.
