Talk about keeping healthy, say what hurts and explain what happened at the doctor's.

Healthy and unhealthy

Para estar en forma... (to keep fit): como fruta y verdura, bebo mucha agua, duermo ocho horas, hago ejercicio.
Unhealthy: como comida basura (junk food), como demasiadas patatas fritas (too many chips).
sano = healthy, malsano = unhealthy.
Mental wellbeing: estoy nervioso / nerviosa (anxious); para relajarme, escucho música.

Saying what hurts: doler

Doler works like gustar. The thing that hurts is the subject.
Me duele la cabeza. = My head hurts / I have a headache.
Me duele el estómago. = I have stomach ache.
Me duelen los pies. = My feet hurt (plural, so duelen).
Note: Spanish uses la / el / los, not mi, for body parts.

At the doctor's

Estoy enfermo / enferma. = I am ill.
Tengo fiebre (a temperature), me duele la garganta (I have a sore throat), estoy cansado / cansada (I am tired).
Accidents: Tuve un accidente. = I had an accident. Me he roto la pierna. = I have broken my leg.
Tengo que descansar. = I have to rest.
Worked example

Translate: My feet hurt.

  1. Doler works like gustar.
  2. Los pies is plural, so use duelen.
  3. Use los, not mis, with body parts.

Answer: Me duelen los pies.

Key idea

Me duele + singular body part, me duelen + plural (me duelen los ojos). Use el / la / los / las with body parts. Tengo fiebre, me duele la garganta, estoy enfermo / enferma.
