Where I live: my home

Describe your home and your bedroom, and say where things are.

Where do you live?

Vivo en una casa / un piso. = I live in a house / a flat. (In Latin America: un apartamento.)
Vivo en el centro / en las afueras / en el campo / en la costa. = I live in the centre / on the outskirts / in the countryside / on the coast.
Es grande / pequeña / moderna / antigua.

Rooms

la cocina (kitchen), el salón (living room), el comedor (dining room), el cuarto de baño (bathroom), mi dormitorio (my bedroom), el jardín (garden)
Hay = there is / there are. No hay = there isn't / aren't.
En mi casa hay tres dormitorios pero no hay jardín.
En mi dormitorio hay una cama (bed), un armario (wardrobe) y un escritorio (desk).

Where is it?

en (in, on), encima de (on top of), debajo de (under), al lado de (next to), delante de (in front of), detrás de (behind), entre (between)
De + el = del: al lado del armario. De + la stays: al lado de la ventana.
Use estar for where things are: El gato está debajo de la cama.
Worked example

Translate: In my bedroom there is a bed but there isn't a desk.

  1. In my bedroom: en mi dormitorio.
  2. there is a bed: hay una cama.
  3. there isn't a desk: no hay escritorio.

Answer: En mi dormitorio hay una cama pero no hay escritorio.

Key idea

Vivo en una casa / un piso. Hay = there is / are; no hay = there isn't / aren't. Encima de, debajo de, al lado del / de la. Use estar for location.
