Every Spanish noun is masculine or feminine. The words for "a" and "the" change to match.

Plurals
Nouns ending in a vowel add -s: un libro, dos libros.
Nouns ending in a consonant add -es: un profesor, dos profesores.
Nouns ending in -z change to -ces: un lápiz, dos lápices.

Translate: In my bag there is a book and two pencils.
- In my bag: en mi mochila.
- there is: hay.
- a book: un libro. Two pencils: dos lápices (z becomes ces).
Answer: En mi mochila hay un libro y dos lápices.
Masculine: un / el / los. Feminine: una / la / las. Most -o nouns are masculine and most -a nouns feminine. Plurals: vowel + s, consonant + es, z becomes ces.
