The near future: aller + infinitive

The easiest way to talk about future plans in French is to say what you are going to do.

Aller (to go)

Aller is irregular. Learn it.

Making the near future

aller (present) + infinitive
Je vais étudier. = I am going to study.
Elle va travailler. = She is going to work.

Future plans

L'année prochaine, je vais aller au lycée. = Next year, I am going to go to sixth form.
Plus tard, je vais devenir médecin. = Later, I am going to become a doctor.
Note: no article before jobs: je vais devenir professeur.
Worked example

Translate: We are going to travel.

  1. We are going = nous allons
  2. to travel = voyager (infinitive)
  3. nous allons voyager

Answer: Nous allons voyager.

Key idea

Near future = present tense of aller (vais, vas, va, allons, allez, vont) + an infinitive. Je vais étudier.
