Describing a trip often needs reflexive verbs in the perfect tense. They always use être.

un échange scolaire (school exchange), mon correspondant / ma correspondante (exchange partner), la famille d'accueil (host family), une sortie scolaire (school trip), rencontrer (to meet), se faire des amis (to make friends).
Reflexive verbs in the perfect
Reflexive verbs use être: pronoun + être + past participle.
Je me suis bien amusé(e). = I had a good time.
Nous nous sommes levés tôt. = We got up early.
The past participle agrees with the subject: Elle s'est bien amusée. Ils se sont couchés tard.

Building a trip story
L'année dernière, je suis allé(e) à Lyon. (aller uses être)
J'ai visité la ville et j'ai rencontré ma correspondante. (avoir)
Le soir, nous nous sommes promenés au bord du Rhône.

Translate: Last year I went to Lyon for an exchange and I met my exchange partner.
- I went: je suis allé(e).
- For an exchange: pour un échange.
- I met: j'ai rencontré mon correspondant.
Answer: L'année dernière, je suis allé à Lyon pour un échange et j'ai rencontré mon correspondant.
Reflexive verbs in the perfect: me suis, t'es, s'est, nous sommes, vous êtes, se sont + past participle that agrees with the subject.
