Opinions and reasons: longer sentences

Every speaking and writing task rewards opinions with reasons. A few patterns turn a short answer into a developed one.

Opinion verbs

أُحِبّ (I like, I love), لا أُحِبّ (I don't like), أَكْرَه (I hate), أُفَضِّل (I prefer).
The noun after them takes ال, because you mean the thing in general: أحبّ الموسيقى (I like music), أفضّل الشاي (I prefer tea).
في رَأْيي ... (in my opinion) and أَعْتَقِد أَنّ ... (I think that ...) start an opinion.

Giving a reason with لأنّ

Linking ideas

و (and) joins the next word: وأحبّ. لكنّ / لكن (but), أيضًا (also), ثُمّ (then).
Build it up: أحبّ كرة القدم لأنّها مُمْتِعة، لكنّي لا أحبّ السِّباحة لأنّها صَعْبة.
(I like football because it is fun, but I don't like swimming because it is hard.)
Worked example

Translate into Arabic: I like science because it is interesting.

  1. I like: أحبّ, and the subject takes ال: العلوم.
  2. العلوم is a non-human plural, so the pronoun is ـها: لأنّها.
  3. Interesting: مثيرة للاهتمام, or the simpler ممتعة (enjoyable).

Answer: أحبّ العلوم لأنّها مثيرة للاهتمام.

Key idea

Opinion verbs: أحبّ، لا أحبّ، أكره، أفضّل + noun with ال. Reason: لأنّ + ـه / ـها + adjective. Link with و، لكنّ، أيضًا، ثمّ. Opinion + reason + contrast = a developed answer.
