Numbers, days of the week and your age

Numbers, days and ages come up in the listening and reading papers at both tiers. Arabic uses its own digits too, so learn to read both kinds.

Numbers 0 to 10

11 to 20 and the tens

11 أَحَدَ عَشَر, 12 اِثْنا عَشَر, 13 ثَلاثةَ عَشَر, 14 أَرْبَعةَ عَشَر, 15 خَمْسةَ عَشَر ... 19 تِسْعةَ عَشَر.
20 عِشْرون, 30 ثَلاثون, 40 أَرْبَعون, 50 خَمْسون.
For 21 to 99 say the units first, then و, then the tens: 25 = خَمْسة وَعِشْرون (five and twenty).

Days and age

The week starts on Sunday: الأَحَد (Sunday), الاِثْنَيْن (Monday), الثُّلاثاء (Tuesday), الأَرْبِعاء (Wednesday), الخَميس (Thursday), الجُمُعة (Friday), السَّبْت (Saturday).
On Saturday = يَوْمَ السَّبْت. Today is Monday = اليَوْمُ يَوْمُ الاِثْنَيْن.
Age uses عُمْري (my age): عُمْري خَمْسَ عَشْرَةَ سَنة or عُمْري ١٥ سَنة = I am fifteen.
Worked example

Read and translate: عندي درس عربي يوم الخميس الساعة ٣.

  1. عندي درس عربي = I have an Arabic lesson.
  2. يوم الخميس = on Thursday.
  3. الساعة ٣ = at 3 o'clock: ٣ is the digit 3.

Answer: I have an Arabic lesson on Thursday at 3 o'clock.

Key idea

Learn the digits ٠ to ٩ and the words واحد to عشرة. 21 to 99: units, و, tens (خمسة وعشرون). The week starts with الأحد; Friday is الجمعة. عمري ... سنة = I am ... years old.
