The pluperfect tense

The pluperfect says what had happened before something else in the past.
Formation
Imperfect of haber + past participle.
había, habías, había, habíamos, habíais, habían + hablado / comido / vivido.
había, habías, había, habíamos, habíais, habían + hablado / comido / vivido.
Use
For an action further back in the past than another one.
Cuando llegué, la película ya había empezado. (When I arrived, the film had already started.)
ya (already) and nunca (never) are common with it.

Irregular participles
The same as for the perfect tense: había hecho, había visto, había escrito, había dicho, había puesto, había vuelto, había roto.
Translate: When we arrived, the train had already left.
- When we arrived: preterite, cuando llegamos
- had already left: pluperfect, ya había salido
Answer: Cuando llegamos, el tren ya había salido.
Pluperfect = había / habías / había / habíamos / habíais / habían + past participle = had done.
