School day, rules, pressures and trips

Describe your school day, the rules and pressures, and a school trip or exchange.

The school day

Las clases empiezan a las ocho y media y terminan a las tres.
Tenemos seis clases al día. El recreo dura veinte minutos. (Break lasts twenty minutes.)
la hora de comer (lunchtime), el horario (timetable).

Rules and pressures

Está prohibido usar el móvil. (Using your phone is not allowed.)
Hay que llevar uniforme. No se puede llevar maquillaje.
Pressures: los exámenes, los deberes, el estrés, sacar buenas notas (to get good grades).
Me parece injusto. (It seems unfair to me.)

Trips and exchanges

una excursión (a school trip), un intercambio (an exchange).
El año pasado hicimos un intercambio con un instituto en Salamanca.
Me alojé con una familia. (I stayed with a family.) Fue una experiencia inolvidable. (unforgettable)
Worked example

Translate: We must wear a uniform.

  1. must (a rule) = hay que or tenemos que
  2. wear = llevar
  3. uniform = uniforme (no article needed)

Answer: Hay que llevar uniforme.

Key idea

Las clases empiezan / terminan a las... Está prohibido + infinitive; hay que / no se puede for rules. Sacar buenas notas = get good grades. Un intercambio = an exchange.
