Telling the time

At what time?

a la / a las + time = at: a la una = at one o'clock, a las ocho = at eight o'clock.
Las clases empiezan a las ocho y media. = Lessons start at half past eight.
Las clases terminan a las tres. = Lessons finish at three.
de la mañana (in the morning), de la tarde (in the afternoon / evening).

My school day

el recreo (break), la hora de comer (lunchtime), el comedor (canteen)
Tengo seis clases al día. = I have six lessons a day.
El lunes tengo matemáticas. = On Monday I have maths. Los lunes = on Mondays (every week).
Worked example

Translate: Break is at a quarter past ten.

  1. Break: el recreo.
  2. is at: es a.
  3. a quarter past ten: las diez y cuarto.

Answer: El recreo es a las diez y cuarto.

Key idea

Es la una; son las dos, tres... Y cuarto = quarter past, y media = half past, menos cuarto = quarter to. A la una / a las + time = at. Los lunes = on Mondays.
