Where I live: my home

Describe your home and your bedroom, and say where things are.

Where do you live?

J'habite dans une maison / un appartement. = I live in a house / a flat.
J'habite en ville / Ă  la campagne / au bord de la mer. = I live in town / in the countryside / by the sea.
C'est grand / petit / moderne / vieux.

Rooms

la cuisine (kitchen), le salon (living room), la salle Ă  manger (dining room), la salle de bains (bathroom), ma chambre (my bedroom), le jardin (garden)
Il y a = there is / are. Il n'y a pas de = there isn't / aren't.
Chez moi, il y a trois chambres mais il n'y a pas de jardin.
Dans ma chambre, il y a un lit (bed), une armoire (wardrobe), un bureau (desk) et une télé.

Where is it?

dans (in), sur (on), sous (under), devant (in front of), derriĂšre (behind), entre (between)
Ă  cĂŽtĂ© de (next to) and en face de (opposite) change: de + le = du: Ă  cĂŽtĂ© du lit; de + la stays: Ă  cĂŽtĂ© de la fenĂȘtre.
Mon chat est sous le lit.
Worked example

Translate: In my bedroom there is a bed but there isn't a desk.

  1. In my bedroom: dans ma chambre.
  2. there is a bed: il y a un lit.
  3. there isn't a desk: il n'y a pas de bureau.

Answer: Dans ma chambre, il y a un lit mais il n'y a pas de bureau.
