Question 3 asks how the writer of Text 1 uses language and structure to achieve an effect, such as interesting or engaging the reader. It is worth 15 marks.

Think about how the writer engages the reader.
How does the writer of Text 1 use structure to engage the reader?
- It starts with a list of discomforts: damp, sagging beds, rain.
- 'And yet' marks a turning point.
- It ends on a warm, specific image of the mother asleep, which stays with the reader.
Answer: A list of hardships turns at 'And yet' into joyful memories, ending on a tender image of the mother.
Question 3: Text 1, 15 marks, AO2. Cover both language and structure, quote briefly, name methods and explain effects on the reader, linked to the focus in the question.
