Getting the right people into the right jobs is vital. Recruitment finds them; selection chooses the best.

Job roles

Directors: set the overall aims and strategy.
Senior managers: plan how to achieve the aims in their area.
Supervisors / team leaders: organise and support a team day to day.
Operational staff: do the core work, such as making products or serving customers.
Support staff: help the business run, such as IT, cleaning and admin.

Recruitment documents

Job description: the job title, duties and responsibilities.
Person specification: the skills, qualifications and qualities the ideal person needs.
Application form: the same questions for every applicant, so they are easy to compare.
CV (curriculum vitae): the applicant's own summary of their education, experience and skills.

Internal and external

Internal recruitment: filling a job with someone already in the business. Cheaper and quicker, the person knows the business and it motivates staff, but brings no new ideas and leaves another vacancy.
External recruitment: advertising outside, such as job websites, agencies or social media. Wider choice and new ideas, but slower and more expensive.
Selection: shortlisting the best applicants, then interviews and sometimes tests.
Worked example

A business needs a new head of marketing with fresh ideas. Should it recruit internally or externally?

  1. Internal candidates may not bring new ideas.
  2. External recruitment gives a wider choice.

Answer: Externally, to bring new ideas.

Key idea

Job roles: directors, senior managers, supervisors, operational and support staff. Documents: job description, person specification, application form, CV. Internal recruitment is cheaper and motivating; external brings new ideas and wider choice.
