Telling the time in Arabic uses ordinal numbers: literally "the eighth hour".

Days and ordinals

Days: الأَحَد Sunday, الاِثْنَيْن Monday, الثُّلاثاء Tuesday, الأَرْبِعاء Wednesday, الخَميس Thursday, الجُمُعة Friday, السَّبْت Saturday.
Ordinals: الأَوَّل first, الثّاني second, الثّالِث third, الرّابِع fourth, الخامِس fifth. Feminine: الأُولى, الثّانِية, الثّالِثة.
الدَّرْسُ الأَوَّل = the first lesson; الحِصّةُ الأُولى = the first period.

My school day

تَبْدَأُ الدُّروسُ في السّاعةِ الثّامِنةِ والنِّصْف = Lessons start at half past eight.
عِنْدَنا سِتُّ حِصَصٍ في اليَوْم = We have six periods a day. الاِسْتِراحة break, الغَداء lunch.
تَنْتَهي الدُّروسُ في السّاعةِ الثّالِثة = Lessons finish at three o'clock.
Worked example

Translate: On Monday the first lesson is maths.

  1. On Monday: يوم الاثنين.
  2. The first lesson: الدرس الأول (masculine ordinal after the noun).
  3. Is maths: هو الرياضيات (هو links the two parts; no verb is needed).

Answer: يوم الاثنين، الدرس الأول هو الرياضيات.

Key idea

Time: الساعة + feminine ordinal (الثامنة), والربع, والنصف, إلا ربعًا. Days: الأحد، الاثنين، الثلاثاء، الأربعاء، الخميس، الجمعة، السبت. Ordinals: الأول / الأولى, الثاني / الثانية.
