School rules and pressures: must and mustn't

Rules need three things: must, forbidden, and don't. Arabic has a neat way of saying each one.

Rules

يَجِبُ أَنْ نَلْبَسَ الزِّيَّ المَدْرَسِيّ = We must wear school uniform.
مَمْنوعٌ اسْتِخْدامُ الهاتِفِ في الصَّفّ = Using the phone in class is forbidden.
مَسْموحٌ بِالأَكْلِ في المَقْصَف = Eating is allowed in the canteen.
After ممنوع and مسموح, use a verbal noun: اسْتِخْدام (using), الأَكْل (eating), الرَّكْض (running).

Don't!

Pressures

ضَغْطُ الاِمْتِحانات exam pressure, الواجِباتُ المَنْزِلِيّة homework, كَثير / كَثيرة a lot.
أَشْعُرُ بِالتَّوَتُّرِ قَبْلَ الاِمْتِحانات = I feel stressed before exams.
في رَأْيي القَواعِدُ عادِلة / غَيْرُ عادِلة = In my opinion the rules are fair / unfair.
Worked example

Tell a boy: Don't use your phone in class!

  1. Don't, to a boy: لا تستخدم (jussive).
  2. Your phone: هاتفك.
  3. In class: في الصف.

Answer: لا تستخدم هاتفك في الصف!

Key idea

يجب أن + verb = must. ممنوع / مسموح + verbal noun = forbidden / allowed. لا + you-form = don't: لا تأكل، لا تأكلي، لا تأكلوا. Pressures: ضغط الامتحانات، الواجبات المنزلية.
