Social media and technology: verbs after أن

To say what you want, can or must do, Arabic uses أن (an, that) followed by a present tense verb.

Technology words

هاتِف ذَكِيّ (smartphone), حاسوب (computer), الإنْتَرْنِت (the internet), وَسائِلُ التَّواصُلِ الاجْتِماعِيّ (social media), تَطْبيق (an app).
أُرْسِلُ رَسائِل (I send messages), أَتَصَفَّحُ الإنترنت (I browse the internet), أُشاهِدُ فيديوهات (I watch videos).
مُفيد useful, سَريع fast, خَطير dangerous, يُضَيِّعُ الوَقْت (it wastes time), التَّنَمُّرُ الإلِكْتْرونِيّ (cyberbullying).

أن + verb

أُريدُ أَنْ ... I want to ..., أَسْتَطيعُ أَنْ ... I can ..., يَجِبُ أَنْ ... I / you must ..., أُحِبُّ أَنْ ... I like to ...
The verb after أن is in the present tense with the ending -a (the subjunctive): أُريدُ أَنْ أَذْهَبَ.
Long forms lose their final ن: يَذْهَبونَ → أَنْ يَذْهَبوا, تَذْهَبينَ → أَنْ تَذْهَبي.

Advantages and disadvantages

مِنْ إيجابِيّاتِ الإنترنت أَنَّهُ سَريع = One advantage of the internet is that it is fast.
مِنْ سَلْبِيّاتِهِ أَنَّهُ يُضَيِّعُ الوَقْت = One disadvantage is that it wastes time.
يَجِبُ أَنْ نَسْتَخْدِمَ الهاتِفَ بِحَذَر = We must use the phone carefully.
Worked example

Translate: I can talk to my friends every day.

  1. I can: أستطيع أن.
  2. Talk: أتكلّم (subjunctive, same spelling).
  3. With my friends: مع أصدقائي; every day: كلّ يوم.

Answer: أستطيع أن أتكلّم مع أصدقائي كلّ يوم.

أريد أن / أستطيع أن / يجب أن + present tense verb (subjunctive). Long forms drop ن: أن يذهبوا, أن تذهبي. Advantages: إيجابيات; disadvantages: سلبيات.
