Campaigns and good causes: in order to

To explain why people campaign or give to charity, you need "in order to". In Arabic that is لكي or just لـ.

Good causes

حَمْلة campaign, جَمْعِيّة خَيْرِيّة charity, أَتَبَرَّعُ بِـ I donate, جَمْعُ التَّبَرُّعات fundraising.
الفَقْر poverty, الجوع hunger, المُشَرَّدون homeless people, اللّاجِئون refugees, حُقوقُ الإنْسان human rights, التَّعْليمُ لِلْجَميع education for all.

In order to

لِكَيْ or لِـ + present tense (subjunctive) = in order to, so that:
جَمَعْنا المالَ لِكَيْ نُساعِدَ الفُقَراء = We collected money in order to help the poor.
رَكَضْتُ عَشَرةَ كيلومِتْراتٍ لِأَجْمَعَ تَبَرُّعات = I ran 10 kilometres to raise donations.
Long forms drop ن: لِكَيْ يُساعِدوا.

We must act

عَلَيْنا أَنْ نُساعِدَ الآخَرين = We have to help others (literally: it is on us to).
عَلَيَّ (on me), عَلَيْكَ (on you), عَلَيْهِم (on them) + أَنْ: عَلَيْكَ أَنْ تَتَبَرَّعَ = You have to donate.
أَعْتَقِدُ أَنَّ الحَمَلاتِ مُهِمّة لِأَنَّها تُغَيِّرُ حَياةَ النّاس = I think campaigns are important because they change people's lives.
Worked example

Translate: We collected money in order to help the poor.

  1. We collected: جمعنا.
  2. Money: المال.
  3. In order to help the poor: لكي نساعد الفقراء.

Answer: جمعنا المال لكي نساعد الفقراء.
