GCSE speaking and writing reward an opinion with a reason, linked to other ideas. This recap builds longer sentences from words you already know.

Saying what you like

Me gusta + one thing or an infinitive: Me gusta el arte. Me gusta ir al cine.
Me gustan + more than one thing: Me gustan los animales.
Also: me encanta / me encantan (I love), no me gusta / no me gustan (I don't like), odio (I hate), prefiero (I prefer).
Keep el, la, los, las with nouns, even where English leaves them out: Odio los lunes. = I hate Mondays.

Giving a reason

porque es + adjective (one thing), porque son + adjective (more than one):
interesante (interesting), divertido (fun), fácil (easy), útil (useful), aburrido (boring), difícil (difficult).
Me gusta el arte porque es divertido. Me encantan los animales porque son divertidos.
Opinion starters: creo que (I think / believe that), pienso que (I think that).

Linking and adding detail

Worked example

Translate: I love animals because they are fun, but I hate Mondays.

  1. I love animals: me encantan los animales (plural, so encantan).
  2. Because they are fun: porque son divertidos (plural).
  3. But I hate Mondays: pero odio los lunes.

Answer: Me encantan los animales porque son divertidos, pero odio los lunes.

Key idea

Me gusta / me encanta + one thing or an infinitive; me gustan / me encantan + plural. Give a reason with porque es (singular) or porque son (plural) + adjective. Link with y, pero, también, entonces and add frequency words like a menudo and nunca.
