Numbers, days and times come up in listening and reading at every level. This lesson recaps them and shows the patterns that catch people out.

Days, months and dates
el sábado = on Saturday. los sábados = on Saturdays (every week).
Dates: el + number + de + month: el catorce de julio. The 1st: el primero de mayo (or el uno de mayo).
Mi cumpleaños es el tres de marzo. = My birthday is on 3 March.
Telling the time
Es la una. = It is one o'clock (singular). Son las dos. = It is two o'clock (plural for every other hour).
y cuarto (quarter past), y media (half past), menos cuarto (quarter to), menos diez (ten to).
Son las ocho y media. = It is half past eight. Son las nueve menos cuarto. = It is quarter to nine.
¿A qué hora? = At what time? a las siete = at seven o'clock. el mediodía = midday.
de la mañana (in the morning), de la tarde (in the afternoon), de la noche (at night).
Say: On Saturdays I go to the cinema at half past seven.
- On Saturdays (every week): los sábados.
- I go to the cinema: voy al cine (a + el = al).
- At half past seven: a las siete y media.
Answer: Los sábados voy al cine a las siete y media.
16 to 29 are one word (dieciséis, veintiuno); from 31 use y (treinta y uno). Cien = 100, ciento uno = 101. No capitals for days and months; los sábados = on Saturdays. Dates: el + number + de + month. Es la una, son las dos; y cuarto, y media, menos cuarto.
