Paper 1 is worth 25% (50 marks). You get 15 minutes to prepare, then the test lasts about 7 to 9 minutes at Foundation and 10 to 12 minutes at Higher.
The three tasks
1. Read aloud: read a short Spanish text, then answer questions about it.
2. Role play: a transactional conversation in a setting such as a café, shop, hotel, train station, campsite, leisure centre, doctor's surgery or in town. Expect to ask a question as well as answer.
3. Picture task: describe one of two photos, answer two questions, then have a conversation linked to the photo's theme.

Reading aloud well
Use the sound rules: silent h, throaty j, qu = k, ñ = ny, rolled rr, and stress the right syllable.

Están + gerund: Están comiendo. (They are eating.) Llevan... (They are wearing...) Hace sol.
In the conversation, develop answers: opinion + reason + example, and use past, present and future.

Describe a photo of a family on the beach.
- Say what there is: En la foto hay una familia en la playa.
- Say what they are doing: Están comiendo.
- Add the weather or an opinion: Hace sol y parecen contentos.
Answer: En la foto hay una familia en la playa. Están comiendo y hace sol.
Three tasks: read aloud, role play, picture task with conversation. Use hay, se puede ver and están + gerund for the photo. Develop answers with reasons and three time frames.
