Describing people: ser and adjectives

Describe what you and other people look like and what they are like, using ser (to be) and adjectives that agree.

Ser: to be

Adjectives agree

Adjectives ending in -o change to -a for feminine. Add -s for plural.
Él es alto. Ella es alta. Ellos son altos. Ellas son altas.
Adjectives ending in -e, and most ending in a consonant, do not change for feminine: inteligente, joven, fiel. Adjectives ending in -or do change: hablador / habladora.
Useful: alto (tall), bajo (short), delgado (slim), simpático (nice), divertido (funny), tímido (shy), hablador / habladora (chatty), perezoso (lazy), inteligente.

Hair and eyes

Use tener: Tengo el pelo largo / corto / rubio (blond) / castaño (brown) / negro / rizado (curly) / liso (straight).
Tengo los ojos azules / verdes / marrones.
Llevo gafas. = I wear glasses.
The adjective comes after the noun.
Worked example

Translate: My sister is tall and she has long hair.

  1. My sister is tall: mi hermana es alta (feminine -a).
  2. she has long hair: tiene el pelo largo (tener, pelo is masculine).

Answer: Mi hermana es alta y tiene el pelo largo.

Key idea

Ser: soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son. Adjectives agree: -o / -a, add -s for plural; -e and most consonant endings stay the same for feminine (but hablador / habladora). Tengo el pelo..., tengo los ojos...
