Some of the most common verbs have irregular past participles. You need them to say what you did, saw, drank and read.
Irregular past participles
Using them
J'ai fait du vélo. = I went cycling.
J'ai vu un film. = I saw a film.
J'ai bu un coca. = I drank a cola.
J'ai pris le bus. = I took the bus.
C'était = it was (for opinions in the past): C'était génial !
J'ai vu un film. = I saw a film.

Questions in the past
Qu'est-ce que tu as fait le week-end dernier ? = What did you do last weekend?
Tu as vu le match ? = Did you see the match?
Answer with the same tense: Oui, j'ai vu le match. C'était super.

Translate: On Saturday I took the train and I saw my cousins. It was great.
- On Saturday: samedi.
- I took the train: j'ai pris le train.
- I saw my cousins: j'ai vu mes cousins.
- It was great: c'était génial.
Answer: Samedi, j'ai pris le train et j'ai vu mes cousins. C'était génial.
Irregular past participles: fait, eu, été, bu, vu, lu, pris, mis, écrit, dit. They use avoir: j'ai fait, j'ai vu. C'était = it was.
