The war divided Americans. By 1973 the USA had left, and in 1975 the South fell to the communists.
Opposition and support
Opposition: student protests and draft-card burning; the media showed the horror of war on TV; the My Lai massacre (1968, revealed 1969), in which US soldiers killed hundreds of civilians; Senate hearings led by Senator Fulbright; veterans against the war.
Support: many Americans still backed the war; Nixon spoke of a 'silent majority'; construction workers ('hard hats') attacked anti-war protesters in 1970.

The peace process and the end of the war
Peace talks in Paris involved US adviser Henry Kissinger and North Vietnam's Le Duc Tho.
Paris Peace Agreement (January 1973): ceasefire; US troops to leave; prisoners exchanged.
The last US combat troops left in March 1973. Fighting went on, and Saigon fell to North Vietnam on 30 April 1975.

Why the USA failed
Vietcong strengths: guerrilla tactics, knowledge of the land, support from the North, China and the USSR, and determination.
US weaknesses: unsuitable tactics, a corrupt and unpopular South Vietnamese government, young inexperienced troops, and tactics that turned villagers against them.
Opposition at home made it impossible to keep fighting.

Explain one reason for the failure of the USA in Vietnam.
- US troops trained for conventional war faced guerrilla tactics.
- Search and destroy and bombing killed civilians.
- This turned many Vietnamese against the USA and helped the Vietcong recruit.
Answer: US tactics failed against guerrilla war and alienated the people they were meant to protect.
Opposition: students, the media, My Lai, Fulbright, veterans. Support: the 'silent majority' and hard hats. Kissinger and Le Duc Tho negotiated the Paris Peace Agreement (1973); Saigon fell on 30 April 1975. US failure came from Vietcong strengths, US weaknesses and opposition at home.
