Sightseeing words

un château (castle), un musée (museum), la vieille ville (old town), la tour Eiffel, faire une visite (to go on a visit), découvrir (to discover), beaucoup de touristes (lots of tourists).

En + present participle

Take the nous form, remove -ons, add -ant: nous visitons → en visitant (by / while visiting).
nous faisons → en faisant; nous mangeons → en mangeant.
Irregular: être → en étant, avoir → en ayant.
J'ai découvert la ville en marchant. = I discovered the town by walking.

The passive (present)

être + past participle + par = is done by.
Le musée est visité par beaucoup de touristes.
The past participle agrees with the subject: La tour Eiffel est visitée par ... Les châteaux sont visités par ...
Worked example

Translate: I discovered the town by walking.

  1. I discovered: j'ai découvert.
  2. By walking: en + marchant (nous marchons → march-).
  3. J'ai découvert la ville en marchant.

Answer: J'ai découvert la ville en marchant.

Key idea

en + nous stem + -ant = by / while doing (en étant, en ayant are irregular). Passive: être + past participle (agreeing) + par.
