Numbers, days and times are tested in listening and reading at every level. French numbers from 70 to 99 work differently from English, so they are worth practising now.
Numbers
Days, months and dates
le samedi = on Saturdays (every week). samedi = on Saturday (this week).
Dates: le + number + month: le quatorze juillet (14 July). The 1st is le premier: le premier mai.
Mon anniversaire, c'est le trois mars. = My birthday is on 3 March.
Telling the time
et quart (quarter past), et demie (half past), moins le quart (quarter to), moins dix (ten to).
Il est huit heures et demie. = It is half past eight. Il est neuf heures moins le quart. = It is quarter to nine.
midi = midday, minuit = midnight. À quelle heure ? = At what time? à sept heures = at seven o'clock.
Timetables use the 24-hour clock: à quinze heures trente = at 15:30.
Say: On Saturdays I go to the cinema at half past seven.
- On Saturdays (every week): le samedi.
- I go to the cinema: je vais au cinéma.
- At half past seven: à sept heures et demie.
Answer: Le samedi, je vais au cinéma à sept heures et demie.
70 = soixante-dix, 80 = quatre-vingts, 90 = quatre-vingt-dix. Days and months have no capitals; le samedi = on Saturdays. Dates: le + number + month, le premier for the 1st. Time: il est ... heures, et quart, et demie, moins le quart.
