Describing your friends is a favourite exam topic. The trick is making every adjective agree with the person you describe.

Friends and personality

un ami / une amie (a friend), un copain / une copine (a mate), mon meilleur ami / ma meilleure amie (my best friend).
Useful adjectives: amusant (funny), sympa (nice, kind), travailleur (hard-working), patient (patient), sportif (sporty), heureux (happy), sérieux (serious), fidèle (loyal, Higher).

Agreement patterns

Position and emphatic pronouns

Most adjectives go after the noun: un ami amusant.
A few short common ones go before: bon, grand, petit, nouveau, jeune, beau, vieux, dernier. Un bon ami. Une nouvelle copine.
After a preposition use moi or toi: avec moi (with me), pour toi (for you), chez moi (at my house).
Worked example

Translate: My friends (boys) are serious and sporty.

  1. My friends: mes amis (plural).
  2. serious: sérieux ends in -x, so it does not change in the plural.
  3. sporty: sportif + s = sportifs.

Answer: Mes amis sont sérieux et sportifs.

Key idea

Adjectives agree: add -e for feminine and -s for plural, with patterns like -x to -se and -f to -ve. Most go after the noun; bon, grand, petit, nouveau, beau go before. Use moi and toi after prepositions.
