In recent Paper 1 exams, Questions 1 to 3 are on an unseen extract (Text One). They test AO1 and are worth 11 marks together.

'In your own words'
Change the wording: 'clung to the side like a limpet' becomes 'held on to the edge of the pool tightly'.
For Question 3, quotations are allowed, but each one needs an explanation.
In your own words, describe the writer's first lesson.
- Point 1: she held tightly to the edge.
- Point 2: young children swam quickly past her.
- Point 3: her teacher was patient and did not mock her.
- Point 4: she was told to breathe out gently and trust the water.
Answer: She held tightly to the edge while much younger children sped past. Her teacher stayed patient and never mocked her, and advised her to breathe out gently and trust the water.
Q1 (2 marks): two words or phrases. Q2 (4 marks): four points in your own words. Q3 (5 marks): five explained points, brief quotations allowed. Stay within the lines given.
