Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language A (4EA1) is built around an Anthology of texts plus unseen reading and your own writing. Everyone sits Paper 1, then either Paper 2 or the Paper 3 coursework.
Paper 1: Non-fiction Texts and Transactional Writing
2 hours 15 minutes, 90 marks, 60%. Everyone takes this paper.
Then Paper 2 OR Paper 3
Your school chooses the route. Both are worth 60 marks and 40%.
Assessment objectives
A school chooses the 100% exam route. Which papers do its students sit?
- Paper 1 is compulsory.
- The exam alternative to coursework is Paper 2.
- So Paper 1 and Paper 2.
Answer: Paper 1 and Paper 2
Paper 1 (60%): non-fiction reading, including an Anthology text, plus transactional writing. Then Paper 2 exam or Paper 3 coursework (40%): poetry and prose from the Anthology plus imaginative writing.
