Fractions, decimals and percentages

Fractions, decimals and percentages are three ways of writing the same amount. Switching between them is a core skill.

Percent means out of 100

37% = 37100 = 0.37
To turn a decimal into a percentage, multiply by 100: 0.6 = 60%.

Fraction to decimal

Divide the top by the bottom: 38 = 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375.
Or make the denominator 10, 100 or 1000: 720 = 35100 = 0.35.

Comparing amounts

To compare, change everything into the same form, usually decimals.
Which is bigger, 25 or 38%? 25 = 0.4 and 38% = 0.38, so 25 is bigger.
Worked example

Write 325 as a percentage.

  1. Multiply top and bottom by 4 to get a denominator of 100.
  2. 325 = 12100
  3. = 12%

Answer: 12%

Key idea

Percent means out of 100. Fraction to decimal: divide top by bottom. Decimal to percentage: multiply by 100. Compare by converting to one form.
