Present tense: -ir and -re verbs, prendre

After -er verbs, the next two groups are -ir and -re verbs. Then meet prendre, an irregular verb you will use all the time.

Regular -ir and -re verbs

Prendre: to take

Key irregular verbs so far

avoir: ai, as, a, avons, avez, ont
ĂȘtre: suis, es, est, sommes, ĂȘtes, sont
aller: vais, vas, va, allons, allez, vont
faire: fais, fais, fait, faisons, faites, font
These four are the most common verbs in French. Know them perfectly before GCSE.
Worked example

Translate: I finish at four o'clock and I take the bus.

  1. I finish: je finis.
  2. at four o'clock: Ă  quatre heures.
  3. I take the bus: je prends le bus.

Answer: Je finis Ă  quatre heures et je prends le bus.

Key idea

-ir: -is, -is, -it, -issons, -issez, -issent. -re: -s, -s, (nothing), -ons, -ez, -ent. Prendre: prends, prends, prend, prenons, prenez, prennent.
