My family and pets: avoir and possessives

Talk about who is in your family, using avoir (to have) and the words for my, your, his and her.

Family words

mon père (father), ma mère (mother), mon frère (brother), ma sœur (sister), mes parents (parents)
mon grand-père, ma grand-mère, mon oncle (uncle), ma tante (aunt), mon cousin, ma cousine
Pets: un chien (dog), un chat (cat), un lapin (rabbit), un poisson (fish).
Je suis fils unique / fille unique. = I am an only child (boy / girl).

Avoir: to have

My, your, his, her

Worked example

Translate: I have a brother but I don't have a sister.

  1. I have a brother: j'ai un frère.
  2. but: mais.
  3. I don't have a sister: je n'ai pas de sœur (un/une becomes de).

Answer: J'ai un frère mais je n'ai pas de sœur.

Key idea

Avoir: ai, as, a, avons, avez, ont. My = mon / ma / mes; your = ton / ta / tes; his or her = son / sa / ses, agreeing with the noun. Je n'ai pas de...
