Both International GCSE History papers last 1 hour 30 minutes and are worth 60 marks. Each question you answer is worth 30 marks, built from three parts of 6, 8 and 16 marks.

Paper 1: Depth studies

Answer questions on two depth studies (about 45 minutes each).
(a) 6 marks: "What impression does the author give about...? You must use Extract A." Analyse the words and tone the writer uses.
(b) 8 marks: "Explain two effects of..." Develop each effect with precise detail.
(c) 16 marks: choose (i) or (ii): "How far do you agree?" Weigh up the statement and reach a judgement.

Paper 2 Section A: Historical investigation

(a) 6 marks: "Describe two features of..." Usually with a choice of two topics.
(b) 8 marks: "How far does Source A support the evidence of Source B about...?" Compare where they agree and disagree.
(c) 16 marks: "Extract C suggests... How far do you agree with this interpretation?" Use the extract, the sources and your own knowledge.

Paper 2 Section B: Breadth study

(a) 6 marks: "Explain two ways in which..." was different or similar at two points in time.
(b) 8 marks: "Explain two causes of..."
(c) 16 marks: choose (i) or (ii): "How far...?" about change over a long period. Cover the whole period and reach a judgement.
Worked example

How should you plan a 16-mark 'How far do you agree?' answer?

  1. Explain evidence that supports the statement.
  2. Explain evidence that challenges it, using other factors.
  3. Finish with a clear judgement that says how far you agree, and why.

Answer: Argue both sides with precise knowledge, then give a reasoned judgement.
