Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language (1EN0) has two exam papers and a separate Spoken Language endorsement. Knowing the shape of each paper helps you plan your time.
Paper 1: Fiction and Imaginative Writing
1 hour 45 minutes, 64 marks, 40% of the GCSE.
Paper 2: Non-fiction and Transactional Writing
2 hours 5 minutes, 96 marks, 60% of the GCSE.
The assessment objectives
How many marks are there in the whole GCSE?
- Paper 1 has 64 marks.
- Paper 2 has 96 marks.
- 64 + 96 = 160
Answer: 160 marks (Spoken Language is reported separately)
Paper 1: 19th-century fiction plus imaginative writing (1 h 45, 40%). Paper 2: two non-fiction texts plus transactional writing (2 h 5, 60%). Writing is worth 40 marks on each paper.
