Paper 1 Question 3: language and structure
Question 3 asks how the writer uses language and structure to create an effect, in a set group of lines. It is worth 6 marks, so aim for focused, detailed points.
What it tests
AO2: how writers use language and structure to achieve effects, using subject terms.
The question gives you a focus, for example how the writer shows a setting or a feeling. Keep every point linked to that focus.
Examiners want both language and structure, so cover both.

Language and structure
A point that works
Point: what the writer shows.
Evidence: a short quotation.
Method: name it if you can.
Effect: zoom in on a word and say what it makes the reader think or feel.

How does the writer use structure to create mystery at the end of the extract?
- The focus moves from the gate, along the drive, to the house: we travel with Eliza.
- It narrows to one candle in one window.
- The last sentence slows down with commas, 'moved, paused, and was put out', leaving a question unanswered.
Answer: The focus narrows to the candle, and the final sentence ends on an unexplained action, so the reader wants to know who is inside.
For Question 3, stay in the given lines, cover language and structure, quote briefly, name the method and explain the effect of precise words, always linked to the question's focus.
